So, apparently Luna Display not only can’t wake up my iMac, it won’t work if the iMac’s internal monitor is turned off. This makes me Extremely Unhappy, given my use case was “sit in the living room and use the Mac from the iPad.”

Luna is definitely best used to extend the physical monitor. You're better off with teamviewer for your needs.

I had the same issue. Fixed by using a remoteBoot iOS app that pings and logs into the iMac set to 'wake for network access'.
